Ever removed someones eyebrows from a pic just to see what they would look like? The short and precise answer is not pretty.
Hang on let me fix that image for you.
No brows no deal!
Likewise, the shape, texture and colour of eyebrows can significantly alter the shape of your face, or, as I prefer to describe it, the way your features hang together.
Right: Ah the ol' "comma" brows
Growing handsome brows is a superficial something I have struggled with. I experience brow envy viewing other's lush eyebrows. I've been trying to rectify those ignorant tweezing sessions since I was 15. In my circumstance, brow makeup is essential for a polished look.
Not all brow products are created equal. I already have a HG brow product which I have reviewed here, funnily enough from the same brand.
Bloom Eye Brow Duo
About the product
Bloom are an Australian brand founded in the '90's. That should be enough to pique your interest. The Eye Brow Duo is a new addition to their brow range and consists of a long wearing retractable pencil (cut at an angle) on one end and a clear brow gel (with a small spoolie applicator) at the other end. This product is designed to fill in any spare patches as well as tame and set wild brow hairs.
I find the concept of this product to be very practical. My brow hairs have a tendency to squiggle themselves in all sorts of directions so combing them into place with a spoolie and setting them with gel is a non-neogtiable part of my makeup routine.
Price and availability
$25 from their online website (who deliver Australia wide and Internationally, with free shipping if you spend a certain amount). This is a reasonable price point considering that I do use both of the products provided.
Nearly two years ago Bloom cosmetics were readily available in department stores and certain chemists, but that is no longer the case. I remember having to fight to get their retractable brow crayon from David Jones or Myer, as it was in high demand. I was lucky enough to buy one at a clearance sale half off. According to their website their products can be bought in store at select pharmacies.
I find this to be sad news for the brand. One of the greatest aspects about buying makeup in Australia is the ability to experience the product in store before purchasing. It also allows the brand to be far more accessible. I really don't like purchasing foundation, concealers or powders online as it a very impractical, inaccurate method in selecting the appropriate shade for your skin tone.
Honestly Bloom are winning with the packaging design. The brow pencil is retractable, meaning there is no sharpening requirement. The spoolie is on the small side, but I don't find this hinders application.
The pencil is cut to a triangular tip
Double ended brow pencil and brow gel
One universal shade "neutral" is available. This is rather limiting, there should be at least one darker shade, for reasons explored below.
In comparison to Bloom's retractable brow crayon the texture of this pencil is significantly dryer. This does impact on colour payoff and its ability to successfully fill in gaps. Fortunately, I have light brown eyebrows and the colour of the pencil matches them very well. I do find I need to go over certain areas a few times to ensure they are filled in. I have no beef with the spoolie and brow gel aspect of this product.
Pencil is not strongly pigmented, but achieves
a natural look
I have not experienced colour fading, patchiness or stray brow hairs.
Minor gaps are still visible, but brows are groomed.
I do like this product, it works well for me, but I prefer Bloom's retractable brow crayon. Whilst I felt that the retractable brow crayon could be used universally, I don't think this is the case for the Eye Brow Duo. Someone with patchy, dark coloured brows may find it difficult to get enough pigmentation from this pencil to successfully fill them in. The dry formula also makes the process more difficult and time consuming. I can not find fault in the brow gel and if I'm honest, having the brow gel attached lifts this product for me.
